"An Open Platform for Studying and Testing Context-Aware Indoor Positioning Algorithms"with a guest talk from Dr Nearchos Paspallis on Wednesday 8th February 2017, 11:30-12:00 in Room CY018.
Abstract: Today we use our phones everywhere, and quite often we depend on them to know where we are. But while GPS works very accurately outdoors, it fails while indoors. In this talk, we will describe some of the most common approaches for indoor positioning, using WiFi fingerprints. We will also make an attempt to answer these two questions: Is fingerprint-based positioning a machine-learning approach? And can we improve its accuracy when the training is enhanced with additional context data besides the WiFi measurements?
Short bio:
Nearchos Paspallis is an assistant professor at UCLan Cyprus, School of Sciences. He specializes in methods for context-aware, self-adaptive applications and services, with emphasis on mobile and pervasive computing environments. He is also working on research related to Responsible Research and Innovation as well as on Gamification.
Dr Paspallis has participated in numerous EU-funded projects since FP5. He currently participates to Responsible-Industry, an EU-funded project that explores how private corporations can conduct their research and innovation activities responsibly.
Nearchos is also the founder of Code Cyprus, a yearly event which aims to "encourage high school students to learn programming".
